A "blog" is short for "Web-log" and blogs are used in all sorts of ways.
Sometimes blogs are outlets for news media. With the advent of the internet many people found an easy way to herald news about various topics of interest without having to be employed by a major media conglomerate. With blogs anybody can be a reporter.
Second, people sometimes start blogs just to report on their lives. Friends can check in, see what's happening, and even leave comments.
Then there are blogs that are simply online discussions. People can go to a blog page, see what the person running the blog has to say and then leave their thoughts on the matter.
Our blog at Holy Trinity is of the last type. Our rector will post a topic and then people can comment on it and (hopefully) learn something and learn about other friends at church.
